Voice & Data – It’s not what it used to be...

Voice and Data plays an integral role in any Structured Wiring Solution. When we ask a customer about voice & data their first thought is usually the home phone line and high speed internet access. In most homes this is a patch work of DSL or Cable service cobbled together with a wireless router and outdated phone wiring that is looped from jack to jack. Many homeowners today don’t even have land lines. They opt for cell phones instead and rely on wireless coverage for shared internet access. Okay this works, so what’s the catch?

In today’s world we need to think outside the box and consider home technology, both wired and wireless. As an integral part of an overall structured wiring plan all voice and data lines are home run to a structured wiring panel and are done with either Cat5e or Cat6 wiring, certified to speeds of at least 1Gb per second or more. What does that mean to you? It means that we can use that wire for data, phone, HDTV signal distribution, CCTV video feeds, and so much more. You see the wire in the walls isn’t just about receiving a phone call or getting on the internet. It’s about future proofing your home and building a wiring infrastructure that has the flexibility to change as your needs and technology change.

At the core of a good structured wiring plan is a very robust cat5e network coupled with RG6Q (think of cable TV) and based on your design will include some level of speaker wiring that is designed to provide a whole host of capabilities to take advantage of today’s technology solutions. This network is used to integrate everything from whole house a/v, lighting control, HDTV distribution, intercom systems, and yes – your trusty old phone line and data network.

Today’s emerging home technology solutions rely heavily on this backbone infrastructure. Take the time to sit down and discuss with us this very important aspect of your project. A little up front planning and a little extra money on the front end will pay you huge dividends and potentially save you thousands down the road as your needs change and technology advances.
